life and climbing

Life is like climbing a mountain. You get some easy parts and some really rough spots.

When one decides to climb a mountain like i did yesterday when i decided to conquer cape town's infamous table. One realises that life is quite similar to it. the decision to climb to the top is like planning a goal for the future and like yesterday it seemed far away very far away. The moment you take that first step you begin to see that this dream or goal can be attainable. They say that a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step . That is so true and it's the most important step in the whole process.

Once you are on the journey the vast nature of the task starts to overwhelm you and like some people in life they will stop and turn back before they get a third of the way there. navigating through the bottom is the normal part it's like getting your ducks in a row before the big one.

once the steep climb begins you start to sweat and begin to realise that it won't be easy. The pain starts and all one needs to do is just grin and bear it and fight through the pain. doubt begins to build up and one needs to take it away as the goal which can't be seen now is just a few steps away. The interesting thing is, the higher one climbs the easier the climb becomes.

before the end things begin to change for me it was the weather but in life it could be external forces that derail you and try stop your progress to the top. It's hard and one can stop and turn back throw in the towel or take a break and realise how far up you are and just soldier on through the pain .

Then there comes the point where you see your goal staring at you and all you need to do is just keep doing what you have previosly been doing in my case i just needed to keep on walking (thanks johnnie) and not rush to get up there , just chill and be calm and it will come to you and you will get through the forest of troubles and think it's over like when a marathon runner reaches the stadium .

at this point the hardwork has been done all one needs to do is just finish what they started many would just stop when everything is fine but just finish the race and right your name in the record books. i realised how Sir Edmund Hillary felt on his journey to everest and getting to the top through a whole lot of hostility and disappointment is the greatest feeling on earth , a word of caution though , The way down is very qiuck.

Disappointment

how does one deal with disappointment? How do you move one after a loss? when you've worked hard to achieve something and it does'nt go your way how do you walk from it . There is a quote that says "on any given sunday you can win or lose ,trick is do you win or lose like a man.

Well i can now say that i now know how Roger Federer felt when he lost to Nadal at wimbledon last year and how Eamon Sullivan felt when Alain Bernard beat him in the 50m freestyle . I can truly say that losing really beats especially when you believe that you could have done a better job. It really tears at ones soul and kills your spirit and with everyone trying to console you makes you feel so bad (like a chill down your spine). You don't know what to do , Do you laugh ,cry or scream. You don't know why the gods have forsaken you ?

When Roger federer cried last year it was a very sad moment as he put gave everything and gave into nothing and he left it all on the court and i believe he was justified to cry. i feel like crying but one has to be strong. I had hope in life but with each day that that election went on my hope was stolen away from me and that was not fair. last night i truly felt as if the world was out to get me. You try so hard to play by the rules but there are things that just want to get in the way of your happiness ,after all this all you want to do is lock yourself away and just get your anger and sadness out but that won't work as you still have to act professional and be a man.

They say be gracious in defeat, be a man and pick yourself up ,dust off your shoulders and walk with your head held high .I must tell you it's hard walking everyday that if things had gone differently you could have or would have been there but your not and life goes on (that ironic i say that all the time) and it's true life does go on and you have to take disappointment and show the world that even if you feel so bad inside that you are the professional people expect you to be. Always believe that God works all things for those who love him and know that the harshest of winter is always followed by the warmest of spring.

impossible is nothing

Imposible is nothing . yes you guessed it, it's the adidas slogan but it has some truth to it as impossible is nothing and through out history we have seen men show the world that what seemed to be impossible actually became possible.

history tells of a story of a few great men who today have shown us that impossible was truly nothing. In 1952 when Sir Edmund Hillary decided to climb Mount Everest many thought it was impossible but he was dedicated and made it to the top of Everest and since then many have followed suit. back in the Fifties the is a story of a man who did the seemingly impossible. Back then they thought that if a man ran the mile under four minutes that his heart would collapse and not function but a men named hugh bannister after countless number of tries achieved that it. The most relevant example for us today is teh 100 metre sprints as many believed that the 10 second barrier but a jamaican Carl Lewis ran it in 9.95 seconds and that is the truth

These peoples stories all have common elements to them . Firstly there was alot of hardwork involved and scondly they had the perseverance and dedication to accomplish the seemingly impossible. all that it tells us today is to have the guts to dream and the will power to work for those dreams.

remember Impossible is Nothing

Glory

Why is it that we want glory ? That question has plagued many people throghout civilization. i believe that it is an intrinsic feeling that we have as humans to want to be immortalized ,to be remembered for teh rest of time , to leave our legacy in this world.

From the beginning of time man has been seeking to make his destiny in an attempt to be remembered for all eternity. Look at the battle of troy , that was seen by the greeks back then as the greatest battle in all of eternity and men went to war to be remembered to seek immortality on the beaches of troy and they all did as even today the story of Paris, Hektor, Priam ,Agamemnon and achilles is still being read today.

In the 1st century AD we saw another quest for glory but this one was in the form of competition .The olympic games in olympia greece were a quest for men to achieve glory as with each branch placed on the winners head symbolised your fate and that you were blessed by the Gods. Sadly the olympics died out but then baron Pierre de Cubertain resurrected the modern games which reinforce this notion of it being intrinsic in us that we seek glory.

Ever since 1896 in greece men and women have worked hard for the moment which may last 10 seconds long to be etched in history as a great athlete. The olympics leads me to ask a question : Do you remember the guy who came second?

The answer is highly unlikely. Who was the man who stayed in apollo eleven while his friends neil and buzz played on the moon. No one knowsand that is hard no one will remember number 2 asa we all give number 1 the glory and that is why today we must never drink from from the cup of mediocrity, give everything and give into nothing and finally win that race and leave a legacy for all eternity.

Dare to do something great with your life!
